George A. Zettler
SAVANNAH – George A. Zettler, 79, died Saturday, July 28, 2007 in Savannah.
Born in Effingham County, he was raised in Savannah and joined the United States Marine Corps in World War II at the age of seventeen. He was awarded the Bronze Star for saving the life of a man while under heavy enemy fire in the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Captain in 1971.
Mr. Zettler graduated from the John Marshall Law School and became an attorney in Savannah. He was elected City Alderman for the Sixth District and served for thirteen years on City Council.
He worked for many years on the Viet Nam Memorial and raised money for the World War II Monument. He was a National Director of the Chosin Few and served as Judge Advocate of the American Legion, Post 184 and the Marine Corps League.
He enjoyed cooking for the Marine Corps League meetings and for the Marine Corps Reservists en route to Iraq.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Esteen Zettler; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Whetzel; his sons and daughter-in-law, Gary and Patricia Zettler; his granddaughters, Victoria Miller and Tiffany Whetzel; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at Beard’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Mr. Zettler was always a gentleman, and always a very zealous attorney for his clients. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
